The arrangement
Contract work, our equipment
This is contract work, not a salaried position. There is no set schedule and no guaranteed number of runs. We contact you when a load needs an escort, you say yes or no, and we go from there.
What you do not need is your own pilot car. You run our trucks, already fitted with every piece of required equipment and maintained for dispatch. That is the part we take off your plate.
We do ask that you stay generally available Monday through Friday. Most of our freight moves on weekdays, and the operators we keep busiest are the ones we can reach and count on during the week. Nights and weekends come up on longer moves and are always by arrangement.
Pay is determined by experience. More time behind the wheel, more states you are certified in, and more of the harder work — high pole, wide loads, mountain and two-lane routes — all move the number. We would rather discuss it with you directly than post a rate that fits nobody.
What we provide
- The truck, maintained and ready for dispatch
- 360° rotating / strobe amber lighting
- Bumper and roof mounted OVERSIZE LOAD signage
- 18-inch red / fluorescent orange flags
- Two-way communication (CB / VHF)
- Height poles for high loads
- Stop-and-go paddle, orange vest, hard hat, reflective triangles
- Two 5-pound fire extinguishers
Requirements
What we are looking for
We are taking on experienced operators only. This is not an entry-level opportunity, and we are not in a position to train someone into it right now.
Must have
- Prior professional pilot car / escort experience
- Current pilot car certification in at least one state we run
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
- A completed defensive driving course
- Comfortable running a height pole and calling clearances
- Confident on two-way radio with the load’s driver
- Able to run multi-day, multi-state trips
- Capable of light mechanical work — fluids, tire changes, bulbs and fuses, and basic roadside troubleshooting that keeps a run moving
- Generally available Monday through Friday
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
Equipment you bring
- A reliable phone. Dispatch has to be able to reach you, and you have to be able to reach the load’s driver.
- A Wi-Fi connected device — phone, tablet, or laptop — that can open and complete paperwork in Adobe Fill & Sign. Agreements, run sheets, and onboarding documents all move electronically, so being able to sign and return them promptly matters.
Helps a lot
- Certifications in several of our 37 states
- Experience on wide loads through two-lane and mountain routes
- Willing to take night moves and weekend runs when permitted
- Reads permits and understands what they require
- Keeps dispatch informed without being chased for updates
Certified in some states but not others, and willing to add more? Say so on the application — that is a conversation worth having.
Veterans strongly encouraged to apply
Singleton Oversize is owned and operated by a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability. We know what the transition out looks like, and we know a service record tells you things a résumé does not — showing up, doing the job right, and keeping your word when nobody is watching.
If you are a veteran with the certifications and the driving record, we want to see your application. Say so on the form and we will look at it closely.
